Getting used to the new job, the new commute, then the holidays (don't get me started...) But... Mr. Buddhist Librarian gave me a brand spanking new Dell laptop... (YAY!!) and I am completely in love with it. (Him too...but then I always have been...computer or not.) I'm thinking about naming the new Dell "Dell-a Street" from Perry Mason...hopefully she'll inspire me to get organized...

So, yesterday I attended PLAN's Annual Tech Day...one of my favorite yearly events and the guest speaker was David Lee King...how freakin' exciting was that? I've subscribed to his blog feed for some time and it was great to hear him in person. Actually Mr. King noted that it's a good thing to keep your blog up to date... and I promised myself that I would get back to learning about new technologies and blogging about it.

The first thing I did was to finally create a trading card. Now, let's see if I can remember how to post a picture...

Well...it sort of worked...I chopped off part of her head...

Here's my Meez...very librarian-ish, I think.

This is from Buddy Labs. But this way you can type it in and change the font to suit you...no handwriting worries!!!

However...posting to your blog takes FOREVER. I've tried twice now and have no idea what the problem is. Hopefully, that's a glitch I'll figure out soon...

Pipl finder and Photobucket

No...not pimple finder...people finder... http://pipl.com/ is today's site on R.A. This has been so much fun and I have learned so much. I am really excited about incorporating many of these technologies into my life and work. It is my intention to continue learning and blogging and Flickr-ing, and Library Thing-ing, and Podcast listening, and...

OK...you get the picture. Here are PLAN's questions for wrapping up or experience:

1. What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?
Where to start... I love blogging. A lot more than I thought I would. Library Thing is just wondermus, Image Chef was too much fun, Zoho is great, and I'm thrilled to have a new place to shop with Etsy.

2. How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?
It has just made me more determined to keep on learning!!!

3. Were there any take-a-ways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
I am flabbergasted at the amount of stuff I really don't know about...

4. What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?
I have no idea... This was awesome!

And last but not least…

If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you choose to participate?
YES!!! OUI!!! SI!!! JA!!! (That's it for my foreign language skills) Sign me up!! I'm ready.

We hope this is not the end of our learning journey, but the start of something amazing …
Me too!!!

Net Library and Project Gutenberg...

Here's where I veer off a bit on technology. I like e-books if I'm looking up information and only need to read a few pages. If I'm going to read an entire book, I want to hold the entire book. Call me old fashioned.

Now...I LOVE audio books. I particularly enjoy audio books on a long car ride, while I'm cleaning house, and while riding my brand new exercise bike. It just makes the time fly. Pretty soon, I'll be starting a new job that's an hour away from my house and I predict I will get a lot of listening done.

I like Net Library e-books because they are more up to date and I like the user interface. Gutenberg is better for the out of copyright material. But what I really liked about PG is the audio files. I looked up a favorite poet, Ella Wheeler Wilcox and there are several of her poems as audio files. These would be great for someone studying poetry in an English class. This way that can hear the inflections of the reader's voice and the little nuances that come out when you read poetry aloud rather than reading silently.

Just be sure to pick the ones that are human read...the computer read ones...well...not so up on the voice inflections.

DOH!! I missed a week... #7 here we go

We were supposed to be blogging about anything technology related for week 7 and looking back that was when I had a techno-meltdown with Technorati and Del.icio.us. So here is my week 7...

Blog about anything technology related that interests me... let me see... hmmmm....

Um...it ALL interests me. :)

Let's just take a moment and look back on the technology of my life...

My first computer was a Commodore 64 with a tape cassette drive. I remember working for an hour on this program that came with it to make these bubbles appear all over the screen. I had to type stuff like >>run/program/set/abcd or some such stuff...(I was 8...it was a looooooong time ago...) Lines upon lines of that stuff. Then we got a Commodore SX-64...a "portable" computer. Uh Huh....can I tell you how heavy that thing was? But it had a printer and a floppy drive (a real floppy drive...the disks were really floppy) and I had Printshop. I was a hit at slumber parties, let me tell you. I must have made ten thousand banners and cards and colored them in...no color printer at that time. And it was a dot matrix printer with the paper that you had to tear off the sides and at the end of each page.

Then came the Timex Sinclair. We got this when my mom and dad went over to tour a new resort. The thing I remember about this little computer was that we had to hook it up to the TV for a monitor and the keys were flat. If I remember correctly...it didn't work all that well either.

For some reason, I didn't really have a computer throughout high school and my first 2 years of college. I think I handed in all my papers handwritten.

Then Al Gore invented the internet. Not really, but in the early 90s when the internet started to gain popularity, Mr. Buddhist Librarian and I started looking at computers. We eventually bought a Gateway that was a far cry from that Commodore 64. The Gateway was a huge computer...the monitor was massive. Then when we decided to go back to school, we upgraded to a Dell with a cable modem...the heaven's parted and the angels sang. The Dell is much smaller than the Gateway...then came a laptop... which is even smaller. Now...I have a phone that I can access the internet on. It also takes pictures, has a word program on, and can store downloaded music. It's a tad bigger than a deck of cards, but only about 1/2 as thick. My phone holds more than my Gateway could. It just blows my mind.

Then look at the games...My first computer game was Pong. Then I got an Atari...I was a Frogger champ in my day. Now, there's Wii and Play Station and the games are so realistic...and you can play with people all over the world. It's amazing.

And cameras. My first camera was a Kodak 110. The film was this cartridge thing that just snapped in. And the photos were printed with already rounded corners. I have a tool in my scrapbooking kit that does this for me now. Then came a 35 MM, then a Panoramic (which is still my favorite, BTW) then a digital. Now you can get digital 35mm. It's just boggling.

What's next? Computer screens in our eye glasses? Blink our eyes and take a picture? The possibilities are amazing...wonderful...and a little scary too.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://buddhistlibrarian.blogspot.com/2007/06/doh-i-missed-week-7-here-we-go.html' title='DOH!! But I noticed on the PLAN blog that Carol mentioned a blog that has something new to learn every day. Woo hoo... http://rameyerguam.blogspot.com/ AND there is a great song to accompany your reading.

Alrighty...Podcasting...

Yahoo! Podcasts was the only site I could get to from work...we have them blocked...However, Yahoo! says they are one of the largest and most organized collections of podcasts on the net.

The first thing I search for is Buddhism...102 results...with 3 of them being series...AND they're FREE!!! Who knew??? Mr Buddhist Librarian has an MP3 thing but we PAY for the audiofiles he downloads. I searched for one of his favorites, Alan Watts, and Great Googly Moogly...PILES of his lectures. The hubster will be beside himself.

Oh...Oh My Goodness... There is a Harry Potter Podcast. WAIT!!! Why am I surprised? For the record, I love Harry and Cannot wait until the 21st!!! Hang a sec...I have to post another blog...

And I'm back... I HAD to get that HP countdown widget on the blog... One of Learning Technology gurus just stopped by and he'd recently been to an iTunes workshop. iTunes has an iTunes U for educational podcasts. I asked what that meant for us and he explained that Florida has an agreement of sorts with iTunes to provide space for podcasts to students. This is a GREAT idea!! Students can pay attention in class instead of trying to copy down everything the instructor is saying...been there, done that...They can note key phrases and then go back and listen to the podcast to review. THEN the school's RSS feed can be updated to alert students and instructors when the podcasts are available for downloading. Love it!!

Back to Yahoo! Podcasts...I searched for Library and found several libraries that have employed this technology. Arizona State University has all sorts of podcasts.

LibVibe is library news with the tag "book reviews" but it looks like there is news and other info as well.

Book Voyages "is a podcast about children's literature from a school library media specialist"

Open stacks is info for librarians on libraries.

NPR Books is book reviews, news and author interviews.

I like the idea of creating a podcast of an author visit or special lecture so that people who have to work or are otherwise unable to attend can still participate in library events. I think my phone can support podcasts...It might be time to investigate that...

Harry Potter Countdown

I know this is not one of the assigned topics...but I found another widget that I wanted to add. Here is the information from the email: "Bucknell prof Eric Faden has produced the most amazing videomashup I've ever seen: "A Fair(y) Use Tale" cuts together thousands of extremely short clips from dozens of Disney cartoons, liftingindividual words and short phrases to spell out an articulate, funny, and thoroughly educational lesson on how copyright works. This is the most subversive and hilarious use of Disney material I've ever seen -- and there's even a really smart chapter about whyFaden used Disney material to make his film."

It seems very well done to me and certainly took quite a bit of time to compile. I hope it comes out on the blog.

ETA: It worked!! It worked!!! There were 5 that I really liked.

Squidoo: http://www.squidoo.com/ An interesting site that you can spend a lot of time on. They have lenses, not web sites or pages. It's kinda Wikipedia-ish, but unlike Wikipedia where there is only 1 entry per topic, Squidoo allows lots of lenses on a topic for multiple views and opinions. Apparently you can even make a bit of money for yourself or your favorite charity.

Wufoo: http://wufoo.com/ I had to check this one because of the name alone. It's a form builder. They have a free one but the regular ones start at only about $10 and go up from there. I like it...forms are a pain to create and this makes it much easier.

Guess the Google: http://grant.robinson.name/projects/guess-the-google/ This one I loved before I knew it had won an award. You have 20 images that all have something in common and you have to guess what it is in 20 seconds. Try it...you'll get addicted.

Esty: http://www.etsy.com/ Buy and sell handmade stuff. Interesting site. Fair prices. They have a section of "Geekery", which of course I had to check out. I LOVE the Kingpin and his 2 Flunkies. I think I might have to get one...and one for my dad...he'd love it!! http://images.etsy.com/all_images/d/df8/694/il_fullxfull.8599745.jpg

Widgets: http://www.yourminis.com/ OK...now I had no idea what a widget is other than a plastic thing that holds a razor blade that we use to scrape off those permanently stuck stickers off new drinking glasses and picture frames. (This was before Goo-Gone).
I look in the information group...I am in the info biz after all... I must say "That was easy" (I have an easy button, too) and now I have a widget on my blog. It's all the way down at the bottom. Cool, huh?

What a fun...and incredibly time consuming job it would be to be a Web 2.0 judge...

I think, of the one's I've talked about here, the only one that could be useful in a library setting is the Wufoo site. Surveys and request forms are the first things that come to mind.

Others on the winners list include: Library Thing...although I feel it should have been 1st place. I think Meebo has HUGE applications in a library. Instant Message Reference, Baby!!! Students and other patrons could make good use of Zoho and Backpack. Writing papers and keeping notes like that would help them, particularly if they didn't have a disk or a jump drive to save their paper on and then loose or forget it at home.

Yo ho Zoho!

Thoughts on Zoho...so far I like it. I think this would have been quite handy when we had to do group projects in school. Sooooo much better than sending attachments through email, then cutting and pasting my stuff into their stuff... We weren't even in the same time zone, much less area, so this would have been perfect.

Let's see...what can I do... Web Dings {web dings} All the typical fonts...nice... up to 36 pt...

This is system font...Greetings Professor Falken...Would you like to play a game?... How about palitino linotype? Or impact? Alrighty...enough of that...what else? it seems we can do subscript...handy for all those reasons to do subscript...but what about postscript? Ahhhh there we are...

What an annoying paper this would be...look at all the pretty colors... a aa aaa aaaa aaaaa aaaaaa and a ton more to choose from... And we seem to be back to normal...or not... fixed. (Ok...it occurs to me that you have no idea what I fixed... we were in all sub or post script)

What else...

oooo tables handy...

It seems that we can insert pictures... lovely... ETA...My picture was HUGE so I deleted it, but it really was there. It took forever to download...

Alrighty...I clicked "insert layer" and a box came up. No clue there. And we have check spelling...thank all the Gods. I have no idea where I'd be without spell check. We can also access special characters...And when you hold your cursor over them, it tells you what they are. I like that. Very user friendly.

And now we get to emoticons... Cute...

Ok...now to publish to my blog...Sing it with me...And she's got hiiiiiigh hopes, hiiiiiigh hopes...

Wiki...wiki...wiki

Don'tcha just love to say it...Wiki...wiki...wiki...

(Yeah...I'm strange...I know.)

So here we are...this week, discussing wikis. I've checked out several of the suggested wikis and am happy to see something other than Wikipedia. According to the PMLC site "The word 'Wiki' comes from the Hawaiian phrase "wiki wiki", which is commonly used to indicate something fast." http://plcmccore.blogspot.com/2006/04/wiki-wiki-wiki.html

I'd wondered...it sorta sounded like a Hawaiian word. Answers.com also had this definition: The word is sometimes interpreted as the backronym for what I know is, which describes the knowledge contribution, storage, and the exchange function. http://www.answers.com/wiki&r=67

I'd bet that Wikipedia is the most popular of the wikis. I think it's a good place to start but would certainly not consider it a primary source...the possibilities of mistakes is way too high. Anyone can add-- or delete-- material. When you post to a wiki you loose all control over the posted document.

I do like the idea of using a wiki in the library. It's a natural for book reviews, new material updates, even surveys and user comments and suggestions.

Classes could also make productive use of wikis. How about using it for a course website...particularly if it is NOT a distance learning course? Students could ask questions as they think about them or even schedule study dates.

I like the idea of wikis...it is a grand way for people who are excited about a topic to get together and share what they know.

Library 2.0

This blog entry has taken me forever to formulate. I started out reading OCLC’s information on Library 2.0, took an entire page of notes and then Googled Library 2.0 to see what else would come up.

As a dear friend says “Great Googly Moogly!!!” 144,000,000 hits.

The first was a Library Journal article by Michael E. Casey and Laura Savastinuk dated 9/1/06. This is a good article with an overview of L2.0…and down at the bottom of the article there is a selection of 2.0 resources, including blogs, key readings, and 2.0 on the web.

Clicking on all these links gave me a ton of information on what people think L2.0 is. And Great Googly Moogly are there opinions!! Whew!

My personal opinion is that a Library 2.0, Library 2nd Edition, Library Updated Version, or whatever you want to call it is a user centered library. HOWEVER…While I am a firm believer in a user centered library, I am also very pro-staff. I think I’m more of a holistic library 2.0 person. This way both the patrons AND the staff get the most benefit out of the library. Not only is it a good place to be, but a comfortable and happy place to work.

In Rick Anderson’s Away from the Icebergs he states:

“We need to focus our efforts not on teaching research skills but on eliminating the barriers that exist between patrons and the information they need, so they can spend as little time as possible wrestling with lousy search interfaces and as much time as possible actually reading and learning… Obviously, we’ll help and educate patrons when we can, and when they want us to, and the more we can integrate our services with local curricula, the better. But if our services can’t be used without training, then it’s the services that need to be fixed—not our patrons."

Yepper that’s a roger, you betcha, yessiree Bob!!

However, I think one of the main barriers that needs to be eliminated is the barrier that sometimes exists between the patron and the library staff. There are many cases where the patron is afraid of asking what they consider a stupid question, not knowing what to ask, or even who to ask. If we don’t know the services are not user friendly, then we can’t fix them. We may have become so used to working our way around something that it no longer occurs to us that a system is not user friendly. Taking a step back and looking through the eyes of the user benefits both user and staff.

Trying Technorati again...

And I still can't get it to work right. So I know I have an account, I just can't access it.

I searched for Learning 2.0 and came up with a variety of sites, and videos but...and this is a big bummer...no songs.

Library 2.0 was a better find...and hey! I found the tags. There are a TON of people doing some variety of this new technologies.

I'm still liking LisZen better...

Trying Del.icio.us again...

And this time it worked...and for those of you keeping track, I did indeed forget my password. But they are pretty quick about sending you the link to reset.

This site is not too bad. I created an account...and a spread sheet for remembering all my passwords (Thank you for the idea Carol!!) I think that having the button on my home PC is what will work the best. Although, I have found that many websites have the Del.icio.us logo towards the bottom, particularly on news sites. Now, how long will that news article be available? Does it expire?

The more I go through these 23 technologies...the more questions I have. *sigh*

ETA: I'm glad that there is an edit function on these blogs. I finish my blog and then go back and read the directions to make sure I am on track with PLAN...generally, I'm not and have to modify the blog. You'd think by this point in my life I'd know to read directions first. You'd think...

OK... I checked out the PLAN del.icio.us page and some of the comments made about the sites. I like seeing the comments, but more, I like clicking on the name to get to the poster's own del.icio.us sites. It's like playing 6 degrees of separation. It's interesting to see what other people find interesting.

Rolly Polly Rollyo

OK... I love Library Thing. In less than 5 minutes, I loaded more than 10 of my books...and I don't even have them with me. This is the best thing ever. Do you know how many times I've wanted to buy a book for Mr. Buddhist Librarian and couldn't remember if he already had it???

http://www.librarything.com/catalog/BuddhistLibrarian

And NOW...when friends and family wonder if we have or if we've read such and such, they can take a look. Let me say for the record (see records again) that all that I have added and soon will add, we have not yet read. Mr Buddhist Librarian and I both have TBR shelves that are rapidly getting out of hand. I just wish that I could figure out how to get my feeds on my blog so that I only have to go to one place. I already have them on my gmail account, but it would be nice to have them here too.

Libraries, I believe, are making excellent use of RSS...my library has a feed you can subscribe to and I've seen them on many others. It is a great way to let people know about changes, new materials, and even weather updates. (The hurricane is coming...we're closed.)

One thing I would like to see...and it may be already in place, is having RSS feeds in online distance learning courses. The feeds could alert the student and instructor to new postings, announcements, and other bits of information without having to log completely in. (I know, I know... it's part of the participation grade, they check to see how often you log in. But think about how much easier and quicker it would be...)

I have created a bloglines account, but I must say that I find it somewhat cumbersome. I think that it is easier to have it on my gmail...but that's just me.

Flickr mashup try #1

  Flickr mashup try #1
Originally uploaded by Buddhist Librarian
OK...I'm at the PLAN Play Day and have created my first Flickr mash-up. After reading the FAQs, I discovered that it sometimes takes a couple of days to get them posted because the photos are reviewed for appropriateness.

I really like Flickr and have discovered several of my friends have posted photos there. This is so much easier than emailing photos and I really like the private or public aspect.

One thing I'm curious about...On the photo's page, the tags are listed and the upload date is posted...and below that it lists what type of camera I used to take the picture. How the hairy heck does the site know that?

Scary...just another thing I need to add to my list of things to find out about.

Who owns what on the 'net??

How much of the Internet is connected??? I mean, I have always believed in the interconnectedness of all things, but for some reason I didn't include the Internet.

When I went to set up this blog, it was quite easy because I have a Gmail account. When I went to Flickr, it was even easier because I have a Yahoo account. I can blog from Yahoo's Flickr to this Google Gmail blog with 2 clicks...maybe less, I just set it up.

Note to self...find a listing of who owns what online. I think the easiest to follow is # 2, accept responsibility for your own learning.

Absolutely yes, you betcha, yessiree Bob!!

No one else can learn for you. You have to have the discipline to find out what you want to know and not just settle or wait for someone to hand it to you.

For me, the hardest of the habits is #3, view problems as challenges. Intellectually I know this to be true…emotionally…well, I don’t want to have any problems. I want all things to run smoothly all the time.

However, by looking at a problem as a learning experience…and not a crisis situation…should make the problem easier to fix or the solution easier to find. (Now I just have to keep telling myself that.)

The entire program can be viewed through the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County. http://www.plcmc.org/public/learning/player.html
(Yeah, I wanted to see if I could add a link...and hey...it seems to have worked)
